Binocular Vision and Functional Vision Services

Seeing clearly is only part of the story. For vision to feel comfortable, your two eyes need to work together well — aligning, focusing and coordinating as a team. When that teamwork is strained, it can contribute to discomfort even when a standard sight test shows clear vision. Binocular and functional vision assessment looks at how your eyes work together and what may be contributing to visual discomfort.

Who may benefit

These are some of the common reasons people enquire about binocular vision and functional vision services:

  • Adults and children with eye strain, headaches or tired eyes after reading or screen work
  • People who lose their place when reading or find words seem to move
  • Children whose eyes appear to turn or who struggle with visual comfort
  • Anyone whose vision is clear on a sight test but still feels uncomfortable to use
  • People with concerns about how their eyes coordinate, focus or work together

What an appointment may involve

Every appointment is shaped around you, but here is what you can generally expect:

  • Assessment of how well your eyes align, focus and work together
  • Checks suited to your specific symptoms and concerns
  • A clear explanation of what we find and whether it may be contributing to your discomfort
  • A discussion of appropriate options or further steps based on your individual results
  • Referral where specialist input is appropriate

Considerations & realistic expectations

Symptoms such as eye strain or headaches do not by themselves establish a diagnosis. Assessment helps us understand whether a binocular or functional vision concern is contributing, and what may help.

We do not promise improvements in learning or academic performance. Visual comfort is one factor among many, and any broader outcomes depend on far more than vision alone.

We assess binocular and functional vision and discuss appropriate options based on what we find. We do not describe a fixed, named vision therapy programme. Where specialist input is appropriate, we will discuss referral with you.
